Spray foam can't be left exposed in a living space. Alberta's building code requires it to be covered by a thermal barrier — in almost every Edmonton home, that means half-inch drywall. We're the crew that boards, tapes and finishes over it.
Sprayed polyurethane foam expands in place, so it insulates and air-seals in a single step. That makes it useful exactly where a wall is awkward to seal any other way — rim joists, cantilevers, cathedral ceilings, the cold corner nobody could ever fix. In a climate that swings thirty degrees in a chinook, air sealing is often what people actually feel, more than the insulation value itself.
Foam is not the right answer everywhere. An open stud wall that will simply be boarded over is usually better and far more cheaply served by batt, and a straightforward attic top-up is usually blown-in. Where foam is the right answer, the job doesn't end when the spraying stops.
Foam plastic insulation cannot be left exposed to the inside of a building. Under the National Building Code — Alberta Edition, Article 9.10.17.10, “Protection of Foamed Plastic”, it has to be separated from the occupied space by a thermal barrier. In houses that is almost always 12.7 mm (half-inch) gypsum board — ordinary drywall.
This catches people out on basement developments more than anywhere else. The foam goes on, the space feels warm and finished, and the assumption is that the work is done. It isn't — not to code, and not for an inspection.
Garages are stricter in Alberta. For an attached garage, Alberta recognises 12.7 mm gypsum board over the insulation and the structural members, and does not allow the alternate performance-based thermal barriers that are accepted elsewhere. If foam has gone into your garage, it is getting drywalled.
Code requirements change and every house is its own case — treat this as the plain-English version, and let your inspector or your installer confirm what your specific assembly needs.
