1. Drywall board
Not all board is the same, and using the wrong
one is the single most common material mistake in a basement or bathroom.
- Standard board
- The default for walls and
ceilings in dry, heated living space. Usually 1/2" on walls; 5/8" is common on ceilings
because it sags less between joists.
- Moisture-resistant board
- Treated to handle humidity.
Belongs in bathrooms, laundry rooms and anywhere that sees steam. It is not a waterproofing
product — a shower surround still needs a proper tile backer.
- Tile backer board
- Cement or fibre-cement panel
used behind tile in wet areas. Drywall of any grade is the wrong substrate directly behind
a shower.
- Fire-rated board (Type X)
- 5/8" board with a core that
holds together longer under fire. Where it is required — garage-to-house walls, shared
walls, ceilings under living space — is set by the building code and your permit, not
by preference. Ask your inspector, not your contractor's memory.
- Sound-dampening board
- Denser or multi-layer panels
that cut sound transfer. Worth it on a shared wall, a media room, or a bedroom next to a
mechanical room. Resilient channel and insulation usually matter more than the board alone.
2. Joint compound (“mud”)
- Taping compound
- The strongest bond, used for
the first coat that embeds the tape. Harder to sand, which is why it is not used on top.
- All-purpose compound
- A middle-ground mud that can
do every coat. Common on smaller jobs where mixing three products is not worth it.
- Topping compound
- Soft and easy to sand, for
the final coat only. It has little bonding strength — used for taping, it cracks.
- Setting-type compound (“hot mud”)
- Chemically hardens on a clock
— 20, 45, 90 minutes — instead of drying. Used to fill deep gaps and to get more
coats done in a day. It does not sand as easily, so it is usually under, not over.
3. Tape and bead
- Paper tape
- Stronger than mesh and the
standard for flat seams and inside corners. It has no adhesive — it is bedded into a
layer of mud, which is where most bubbling problems start if that layer is too thin.
- Mesh tape
- Self-adhesive and quick, best
on small patches and used with setting compound. On long butt joints it is more prone to
cracking than paper.
- Corner bead
- The strip that forms and
protects an outside corner — metal, vinyl or paper-faced. Vinyl will not rust, which
matters in a bathroom or a basement.
- Bullnose and trim bead
- Rounded corners, archways and
the clean edge where drywall meets a window return or a different material.
4. Fasteners and framing
Drywall screws are sized to the board and the
framing behind it — coarse thread into wood, fine thread into steel studs. Screws set
too deep tear the paper and lose most of their hold; that is why a proper screw gun has a
depth stop. Resilient channel, sound clips and strapping all change how the board is fixed and
should appear on a quote if they are part of the plan.
5. Primer and paint
- Drywall primer / sealer
- New drywall is two different
surfaces — paper and dried mud — and they absorb paint at different rates. Primer
evens that out. Skipping it is the usual cause of “joint banding”, where every
seam shows through the finished wall in side light.
- Sheen
- Flat hides imperfections and
is the safest choice on a large ceiling. Eggshell and satin clean up better and suit
hallways, kids' rooms and kitchens. The glossier the sheen, the more every flaw in the
finish shows — which is also why a higher level of finish costs more.
- Level of finish
- Finishing is graded from a
taped-only joint up to a fully skim-coated wall. A garage does not need what a
floor-to-ceiling-window living room needs. If two quotes are far apart, this is very often
the difference — ask which level each one includes.
6. Texture
Knockdown, orange peel, stipple and popcorn are
all sprayed finishes. Matching an existing texture on a repair is a skill in itself — the
mix, the tip and the timing all change the result, and a patch that is technically flat can
still be obvious because the texture does not match. On a repair, ask how the match will be
tested before the whole wall is sprayed.
Anything structural — removing
or altering a load-bearing wall — needs a licensed structural engineer and the right
permits. That is outside what any drywall contractor decides on site.
