Batt insulation in Terwillegar Towne, fitted rather than stuffed

A batt only performs if it fills the cavity completely and is not squashed. In Terwillegar Towne the two things that ruin it are compression — jamming a wider batt into a narrow bay — and gaps around wiring and boxes, where the insulation is stuffed behind rather than split around.

Vapour control, and why the order matters

Warm side, always

In Terwillegar Towne the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the insulation. Putting it in the wrong place, or having two of them, traps moisture inside the assembly where it cannot dry.

Sequencing

Insulation is completed and inspected before the barrier goes on, and the barrier is sealed at penetrations before boarding. Once drywall is up, none of this can be corrected without taking the wall apart again.

Terwillegar Towne drywall in context

What we see in Terwillegar Towne

In Terwillegar Towne the drywall work is first-year settling, basement dev for first owners, Level 5 over builder-grade. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Cutting to the bay, not the label

Real framing is not nominal

Terwillegar Towne walls, especially in older homes and renovations, carry bays that are wider or narrower than standard, plus cripples, blocking and services.

What we do

Measure and cut. A batt forced into a narrow bay is compressed and underperforms; one left short in a wide bay leaves a gap that convects. Both are invisible after boarding.

Cathedral ceilings and the ventilation gap

Do not fill it to the deck

In a vaulted Terwillegar Towne ceiling there has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing. Packing batts tight to the deck closes it, and the roof has no way to dry.

What that costs later

Damp sheathing, mould and in the worst cases rot — none of it visible until it is expensive. The batt is sized so the channel stays open, which means accepting slightly less insulation depth in exchange for a roof that lasts.

Kneewalls and the rooms in the roof

A cold face nobody sees

A kneewall in an Terwillegar Towne storey-and-a-half has attic space directly behind it, so the back of that batt is exposed to outdoor air.

What it needs

The batt supported and its back face covered, rather than left open to the attic where air washes straight through it. Uncovered kneewall insulation is one of the most common finds in older homes.

Cathedral ceilings and leaving the air gap

Do not fill it completely

A vented cathedral ceiling in an Terwillegar Towne home needs a clear air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing.

Why

Packing the rafter bay full removes the ventilation that keeps the deck cold and dry, which is how a warm sloped ceiling ends up with a damp deck. Baffles hold the channel open.

Compression is the most common Terwillegar Towne mistake

A squashed batt is a weaker batt

Batt insulation works because of the still air trapped in it. Compress it into a narrower bay and you lose a meaningful share of its performance while paying for the full product.

The fix is measurement

Terwillegar Towne framing is not always at a standard spacing, especially in older homes and renovations. We measure the bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt into a non-standard cavity.

Batt Insulation Terwillegar Towne Edmonton: your questions answered

Should I use mineral wool or fibreglass?
Fibreglass fitted well beats mineral wool fitted badly for an ordinary partition. Mineral wool is worth the difference on party walls, bedrooms and anywhere sound or fire performance matters — it is denser and holds its shape in the cavity.
Do you install the vapour barrier as well?
Yes, and the order matters. Insulation is completed first, the barrier goes on the warm side and is sealed at penetrations before boarding. None of it can be corrected once the drywall is up.
Why is my Terwillegar Towne basement cold along the floor edge?
Usually the rim joist. It is thin, directly exposed to outside, and in most basements it is bare or has a batt tucked loosely against it. It needs air sealing first, then insulating.
Faced or unfaced batts?
One system per wall. Faced batts carry their own vapour retarder; unfaced are paired with a separate poly barrier. Using both in one assembly can trap moisture between two retarders.
My room is cold and draughty. Will batts fix it?
Probably not on their own. Draughts around windows, an unsealed rim joist or gaps at the top plate are air leaks, and insulation does not stop air. We would rather diagnose the draught and quote the sealing, which is usually the cheaper half.
What about the pipes in my exterior wall?
Insulation goes behind them, between the pipe and the outside, not stuffed in around them. A water line on the cold side of the batt is a freeze risk in an Alberta winter, not just an efficiency question.
