Mineral wool and fibreglass batts in Minchau walls and ceilings

Most of what separates good batt work from bad in Minchau is invisible once the drywall is on. That is exactly why it is worth doing carefully: nobody can inspect it later without opening the wall, and the difference shows up as a cold room rather than as a visible defect.

Attic hatches, knee walls and the bits at the edges

Small areas, outsized effect

Knee walls in a Minchau storey-and-a-half, the back of an attic hatch and the ends of joist bays are commonly left bare because they are awkward.

Why we do them anyway

They are direct openings between heated and unheated space. A wall insulated to a high standard with an uninsulated knee wall beside it performs like the weaker of the two, and those edges are where cold rooms usually trace back to.

Minchau drywall in context

About Minchau

Minchau was named in honour of August Minchau, who immigrated from Poland in 1894 and settled in the Mill Woods area.

What we see in Minchau

In Minchau the drywall work is popcorn and stipple ceiling removal, settling+truss-uplift cracks, nail pops, Poly-B repipe patching repipe patching. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Mineral wool against fibreglass in Minchau

Different tools

Fibreglass batts are the common choice and perform well when fitted properly. Mineral wool is denser, holds its shape better in a cavity, handles fire differently and performs noticeably better for sound.

Where we would spend the difference

Party walls, bedrooms, mechanical rooms and any assembly where sound or fire matters. For an ordinary interior partition in Minchau, fibreglass fitted well beats mineral wool fitted badly.

Rim joists, the coldest part of a Minchau basement

Small area, large loss

The rim joist is the band of framing where the floor meets the foundation. It is thin, it is directly exposed to outside, and in most Minchau basements it is either bare or has a batt tucked loosely against it.

Air sealing first

A batt alone against a rim joist can trap moist air against a cold surface. The joint gets sealed first, then insulated, so warm household air is not reaching the cold band behind the insulation.

What batts will not fix

Insulation is not air sealing

If a Minchau room is cold because of draughts around windows, an unsealed rim joist or gaps at the top plate, filling the cavity with batts will disappoint you.

Why we say it first

We would rather diagnose the draught and quote the sealing than sell you insulation that does not solve the complaint. The two jobs go together, and the sealing is usually the cheaper half.

Sound as a side effect of insulating

You get some for free

Filling an interior Minchau wall cavity with batts noticeably reduces voice and television noise between rooms, even when sound was not the reason for the job.

Where to spend a little more

If a bedroom, office or bathroom wall is being opened anyway, upgrading that specific cavity to a denser acoustic or mineral wool batt costs very little on top of work already happening. We will point out which walls those are while we are quoting.

Garage-to-house walls and ceilings

Two jobs at once

The wall between an Minchau garage and the house, and the ceiling under living space, usually need a fire separation as well as insulation. The two have to be planned together because the board and the assembly are specified.

Sequencing

Insulation and vapour control go in, get inspected, then the rated board goes on. Doing it in the wrong order means opening a finished rated assembly, which is the expensive way to discover the sequence.

Batt Insulation Minchau Edmonton: your questions answered

My room is cold and draughty. Will batts fix it?
Probably not on their own. Draughts around windows, an unsealed rim joist or gaps at the top plate are air leaks, and insulation does not stop air. We would rather diagnose the draught and quote the sealing, which is usually the cheaper half.
There is a water pipe in my exterior wall. What happens to it?
Wherever the plumbing allows, the insulation goes behind the pipe so the pipe stays on the heated side. If it cannot, we flag it rather than boarding over a line we know is exposed to freezing.
Does it matter if the batt is squashed in a bit?
Yes, more than most people expect. Batts work through trapped still air, so compressing one into a narrow bay costs a real share of its performance. We measure the Minchau bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt in.
Can you fill my vaulted ceiling completely?
No, and it matters. There has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing so the roof can dry. Packing it tight leads to damp sheathing and eventually rot, none of it visible until it is expensive.
Faced or unfaced batts?
One system per wall. Faced batts carry their own vapour retarder; unfaced are paired with a separate poly barrier. Using both in one assembly can trap moisture between two retarders.
Do you insulate knee walls and attic hatches?
Yes, and they matter more than their size suggests. They are direct openings between heated and unheated space, and a well-insulated wall next to a bare knee wall performs like the weaker of the two.
