Batt insulation in Granville before the vapour barrier goes on

A batt only performs if it fills the cavity completely and is not squashed. In Granville the two things that ruin it are compression — jamming a wider batt into a narrow bay — and gaps around wiring and boxes, where the insulation is stuffed behind rather than split around.

Cathedral ceilings and leaving the air gap

Do not fill it completely

A vented cathedral ceiling in an Granville home needs a clear air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing.

Why

Packing the rafter bay full removes the ventilation that keeps the deck cold and dry, which is how a warm sloped ceiling ends up with a damp deck. Baffles hold the channel open.

Granville drywall in context

What we see in Granville

In Granville the drywall work is first-year settling, basement dev for first owners, Level 5 over builder-grade. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Batts around ducts and services

What is on the cold side

A duct or pipe run through an exterior Granville bay must have insulation behind it, between it and the outside, not merely stuffed in around it.

Consequence of getting it wrong

A water line on the cold side of the batt is a freeze risk in an Alberta winter, not just an efficiency question. It is worth the extra few minutes on each bay.

Rim joists, the coldest part of a Granville basement

Small area, large loss

The rim joist is the band of framing where the floor meets the foundation. It is thin, it is directly exposed to outside, and in most Granville basements it is either bare or has a batt tucked loosely against it.

Air sealing first

A batt alone against a rim joist can trap moist air against a cold surface. The joint gets sealed first, then insulated, so warm household air is not reaching the cold band behind the insulation.

Vapour control, and why the order matters

Warm side, always

In Granville the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the insulation. Putting it in the wrong place, or having two of them, traps moisture inside the assembly where it cannot dry.

Sequencing

Insulation is completed and inspected before the barrier goes on, and the barrier is sealed at penetrations before boarding. Once drywall is up, none of this can be corrected without taking the wall apart again.

Cutting to the bay, not the label

Real framing is not nominal

Granville walls, especially in older homes and renovations, carry bays that are wider or narrower than standard, plus cripples, blocking and services.

What we do

Measure and cut. A batt forced into a narrow bay is compressed and underperforms; one left short in a wide bay leaves a gap that convects. Both are invisible after boarding.

Mineral wool against fibreglass in Granville

Different tools

Fibreglass batts are the common choice and perform well when fitted properly. Mineral wool is denser, holds its shape better in a cavity, handles fire differently and performs noticeably better for sound.

Where we would spend the difference

Party walls, bedrooms, mechanical rooms and any assembly where sound or fire matters. For an ordinary interior partition in Granville, fibreglass fitted well beats mineral wool fitted badly.

Batt Insulation Granville Edmonton: your questions answered

Does it matter if the batt is squashed in a bit?
Yes, more than most people expect. Batts work through trapped still air, so compressing one into a narrow bay costs a real share of its performance. We measure the Granville bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt in.
What about the wiring in the wall?
The batt gets split so part sits behind the cable and part in front, and it is cut around boxes. Stuffing it behind the wiring leaves an uninsulated void right where there is already a hole in the vapour barrier.
Do you install the vapour barrier as well?
Yes, and the order matters. Insulation is completed first, the barrier goes on the warm side and is sealed at penetrations before boarding. None of it can be corrected once the drywall is up.
Does the garage wall need anything special?
Usually yes — a fire separation as well as insulation, planned together because the board is specified. Insulation and vapour control go in and get inspected, then the rated board goes on.
Will insulating an interior wall help with noise?
Yes, noticeably for voices and television, even when sound was not the reason for the job. If a bedroom or office wall is open anyway, upgrading that cavity to a denser batt costs very little on top.
Can you fill my vaulted ceiling completely?
No, and it matters. There has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing so the roof can dry. Packing it tight leads to damp sheathing and eventually rot, none of it visible until it is expensive.
