Mineral wool and fibreglass batts in Elsinore walls and ceilings

A batt only performs if it fills the cavity completely and is not squashed. In Elsinore the two things that ruin it are compression — jamming a wider batt into a narrow bay — and gaps around wiring and boxes, where the insulation is stuffed behind rather than split around.

Kneewalls and the rooms in the roof

A cold face nobody sees

A kneewall in an Elsinore storey-and-a-half has attic space directly behind it, so the back of that batt is exposed to outdoor air.

What it needs

The batt supported and its back face covered, rather than left open to the attic where air washes straight through it. Uncovered kneewall insulation is one of the most common finds in older homes.

Elsinore drywall in context

About Elsinore

One of the most northeasterly neighbourhoods in the Castle Downs Extension area, this development was used for agricultrual clutivation before urban development began in the 1980's.

What we see in Elsinore

In Elsinore the drywall work is popcorn and stipple ceiling removal, settling+truss-uplift cracks, nail pops, Poly-B repipe patching repipe patching. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Vapour control, and why the order matters

Warm side, always

In Elsinore the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the insulation. Putting it in the wrong place, or having two of them, traps moisture inside the assembly where it cannot dry.

Sequencing

Insulation is completed and inspected before the barrier goes on, and the barrier is sealed at penetrations before boarding. Once drywall is up, none of this can be corrected without taking the wall apart again.

Mineral wool against fibreglass in Elsinore

Different tools

Fibreglass batts are the common choice and perform well when fitted properly. Mineral wool is denser, holds its shape better in a cavity, handles fire differently and performs noticeably better for sound.

Where we would spend the difference

Party walls, bedrooms, mechanical rooms and any assembly where sound or fire matters. For an ordinary interior partition in Elsinore, fibreglass fitted well beats mineral wool fitted badly.

Insulating an existing Elsinore wall without opening it

The honest limits

Batts need an open cavity. If a Elsinore wall is finished and staying finished, batts are not the product — that is a job for a blown-in or injected material, or for adding insulation on the room side.

What we say

We would rather tell you batts are the wrong answer for a closed wall than sell you a partial job. Where the wall is already open for other work, that is the moment to insulate properly.

Sound as a side effect of insulating

You get some for free

Filling an interior Elsinore wall cavity with batts noticeably reduces voice and television noise between rooms, even when sound was not the reason for the job.

Where to spend a little more

If a bedroom, office or bathroom wall is being opened anyway, upgrading that specific cavity to a denser acoustic or mineral wool batt costs very little on top of work already happening. We will point out which walls those are while we are quoting.

Compression is the most common Elsinore mistake

A squashed batt is a weaker batt

Batt insulation works because of the still air trapped in it. Compress it into a narrower bay and you lose a meaningful share of its performance while paying for the full product.

The fix is measurement

Elsinore framing is not always at a standard spacing, especially in older homes and renovations. We measure the bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt into a non-standard cavity.

Batt Insulation Elsinore Edmonton: your questions answered

What about the pipes in my exterior wall?
Insulation goes behind them, between the pipe and the outside, not stuffed in around them. A water line on the cold side of the batt is a freeze risk in an Alberta winter, not just an efficiency question.
Should I use mineral wool or fibreglass?
Fibreglass fitted well beats mineral wool fitted badly for an ordinary partition. Mineral wool is worth the difference on party walls, bedrooms and anywhere sound or fire performance matters — it is denser and holds its shape in the cavity.
Does the garage wall need anything special?
Usually yes — a fire separation as well as insulation, planned together because the board is specified. Insulation and vapour control go in and get inspected, then the rated board goes on.
Can batts go straight against my Elsinore basement concrete?
No. Against bare concrete they sit on the cold side where moisture cannot dry, and that is the usual reason a finished basement smells musty a year later. The framing is held off, or a rigid layer goes on first, so the batts stay on the warm side.
Will insulating an interior wall help with noise?
Yes, noticeably for voices and television, even when sound was not the reason for the job. If a bedroom or office wall is open anyway, upgrading that cavity to a denser batt costs very little on top.
Can you fill my vaulted ceiling completely?
No, and it matters. There has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing so the roof can dry. Packing it tight leads to damp sheathing and eventually rot, none of it visible until it is expensive.
