Batt insulation in Athlone, fitted rather than stuffed

Most of what separates good batt work from bad in Athlone is invisible once the drywall is on. That is exactly why it is worth doing carefully: nobody can inspect it later without opening the wall, and the difference shows up as a cold room rather than as a visible defect.

Insulating an existing Athlone wall without opening it

The honest limits

Batts need an open cavity. If a Athlone wall is finished and staying finished, batts are not the product — that is a job for a blown-in or injected material, or for adding insulation on the room side.

What we say

We would rather tell you batts are the wrong answer for a closed wall than sell you a partial job. Where the wall is already open for other work, that is the moment to insulate properly.

Athlone drywall in context

About Athlone

Named in honour of the Earl of Athlone, Canada's Governor-General from 1940-46, Athlone is located north of the Canadian National Rail line.

What we see in Athlone

In Athlone the drywall work is plaster and lath repair, popcorn and stipple ceiling removal, careful patching into original surfaces. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Wiring, boxes and the gaps behind them

Where the cold gets in

The fastest way to ruin a wall in Athlone is to stuff the batt behind the wiring and the electrical boxes. It leaves an uninsulated void exactly where there is already a hole in the vapour barrier.

Split, do not stuff

The batt is split so half sits behind the cable and half in front, and it is cut around boxes rather than compressed past them. It is slower and it is the difference between a wall that performs and one that only looks insulated.

Attic hatches, knee walls and the bits at the edges

Small areas, outsized effect

Knee walls in a Athlone storey-and-a-half, the back of an attic hatch and the ends of joist bays are commonly left bare because they are awkward.

Why we do them anyway

They are direct openings between heated and unheated space. A wall insulated to a high standard with an uninsulated knee wall beside it performs like the weaker of the two, and those edges are where cold rooms usually trace back to.

Friction fit, not stapled tight

How a batt is meant to sit

An unfaced batt holds itself in an Athlone bay by friction across its full width, touching the framing on both sides and the sheathing behind.

The common shortcut

Pulling a faced batt tight and stapling the flanges to the face of the stud, which dishes the middle and leaves a void behind. It looks tidy from the room and performs worse than it measures.

Compression is the most common Athlone mistake

A squashed batt is a weaker batt

Batt insulation works because of the still air trapped in it. Compress it into a narrower bay and you lose a meaningful share of its performance while paying for the full product.

The fix is measurement

Athlone framing is not always at a standard spacing, especially in older homes and renovations. We measure the bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt into a non-standard cavity.

Vapour control, and why the order matters

Warm side, always

In Athlone the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the insulation. Putting it in the wrong place, or having two of them, traps moisture inside the assembly where it cannot dry.

Sequencing

Insulation is completed and inspected before the barrier goes on, and the barrier is sealed at penetrations before boarding. Once drywall is up, none of this can be corrected without taking the wall apart again.

Batt Insulation Athlone Edmonton: your questions answered

Does the garage wall need anything special?
Usually yes — a fire separation as well as insulation, planned together because the board is specified. Insulation and vapour control go in and get inspected, then the rated board goes on.
Why is my Athlone basement cold along the floor edge?
Usually the rim joist. It is thin, directly exposed to outside, and in most basements it is bare or has a batt tucked loosely against it. It needs air sealing first, then insulating.
Does it matter if the batt is squashed in a bit?
Yes, more than most people expect. Batts work through trapped still air, so compressing one into a narrow bay costs a real share of its performance. We measure the Athlone bays and cut to fit rather than forcing a standard batt in.
Faced or unfaced batts?
One system per wall. Faced batts carry their own vapour retarder; unfaced are paired with a separate poly barrier. Using both in one assembly can trap moisture between two retarders.
Can the rafter bays be filled right up?
Not in a vented cathedral ceiling. A clear air channel has to stay between insulation and roof sheathing, held open with baffles, or the deck cannot stay cold and dry.
My room is cold and draughty. Will batts fix it?
Probably not on their own. Draughts around windows, an unsealed rim joist or gaps at the top plate are air leaks, and insulation does not stop air. We would rather diagnose the draught and quote the sealing, which is usually the cheaper half.
