Batt insulation in Allendale before the vapour barrier goes on

A batt only performs if it fills the cavity completely and is not squashed. In Allendale the two things that ruin it are compression — jamming a wider batt into a narrow bay — and gaps around wiring and boxes, where the insulation is stuffed behind rather than split around.

Cathedral ceilings and the ventilation gap

Do not fill it to the deck

In a vaulted Allendale ceiling there has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing. Packing batts tight to the deck closes it, and the roof has no way to dry.

What that costs later

Damp sheathing, mould and in the worst cases rot — none of it visible until it is expensive. The batt is sized so the channel stays open, which means accepting slightly less insulation depth in exchange for a roof that lasts.

Allendale drywall in context

About Allendale

Once farmed by the Allen family, this area was annexed by the City of Strathcona in 1907 and became part of Edmonton in 1912 when Strathcona and Edmonton amalgamated.

What we see in Allendale

In Allendale the drywall work is plaster and lath repair, popcorn and stipple ceiling removal, careful patching into original surfaces. We confirm what your home actually needs on site, in writing, before anything starts.

Friction fit, not stapled tight

How a batt is meant to sit

An unfaced batt holds itself in an Allendale bay by friction across its full width, touching the framing on both sides and the sheathing behind.

The common shortcut

Pulling a faced batt tight and stapling the flanges to the face of the stud, which dishes the middle and leaves a void behind. It looks tidy from the room and performs worse than it measures.

Handling, dust and leaving it clean

Practical realities

Batt work makes airborne fibre and it settles everywhere if the space is not controlled.

How the site is run

Covered openings, the crew in proper protection, offcuts bagged rather than swept into the cavity, and a vacuum through the Allendale space at the end of the day rather than at the end of the job.

Vapour control, and why the order matters

Warm side, always

In Allendale the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the insulation. Putting it in the wrong place, or having two of them, traps moisture inside the assembly where it cannot dry.

Sequencing

Insulation is completed and inspected before the barrier goes on, and the barrier is sealed at penetrations before boarding. Once drywall is up, none of this can be corrected without taking the wall apart again.

Garage-to-house walls and ceilings

Two jobs at once

The wall between an Allendale garage and the house, and the ceiling under living space, usually need a fire separation as well as insulation. The two have to be planned together because the board and the assembly are specified.

Sequencing

Insulation and vapour control go in, get inspected, then the rated board goes on. Doing it in the wrong order means opening a finished rated assembly, which is the expensive way to discover the sequence.

Batts around ducts and services

What is on the cold side

A duct or pipe run through an exterior Allendale bay must have insulation behind it, between it and the outside, not merely stuffed in around it.

Consequence of getting it wrong

A water line on the cold side of the batt is a freeze risk in an Alberta winter, not just an efficiency question. It is worth the extra few minutes on each bay.

Batt Insulation Allendale Edmonton: your questions answered

Do you install the vapour barrier as well?
Yes, and the order matters. Insulation is completed first, the barrier goes on the warm side and is sealed at penetrations before boarding. None of it can be corrected once the drywall is up.
What about the wiring in the wall?
The batt gets split so part sits behind the cable and part in front, and it is cut around boxes. Stuffing it behind the wiring leaves an uninsulated void right where there is already a hole in the vapour barrier.
Can you insulate my finished walls without removing the drywall?
Not with batts — they need an open cavity. That is a job for a blown-in or injected product, or for adding insulation on the room side. We will tell you that rather than sell you a partial job.
Can the rafter bays be filled right up?
Not in a vented cathedral ceiling. A clear air channel has to stay between insulation and roof sheathing, held open with baffles, or the deck cannot stay cold and dry.
Can you fill my vaulted ceiling completely?
No, and it matters. There has to be an air channel between the insulation and the roof sheathing so the roof can dry. Packing it tight leads to damp sheathing and eventually rot, none of it visible until it is expensive.
Faced or unfaced batts?
One system per wall. Faced batts carry their own vapour retarder; unfaced are paired with a separate poly barrier. Using both in one assembly can trap moisture between two retarders.
